Frontier News – February 2020 Edition

Frontier News is our quarterly publication where we keep our supporters up to date with stories across remote Australia.

We’re heartened by stories of people rallying behind those who are struggling with the ongoing drought, or have lost everything to bushfire. We share some of these stories with you in this edition, including a personal account from our Bush Chaplain Rev Rowena Harris, who was trapped in Mallacoota by the fires. We also introduce you to Pastor Julia Lennon, our first ever female Aboriginal Bush Chaplain, who is working to bring First and Second Peoples together in Oodnadatta.

Service of Thanksgiving – Rev Graham George Lehmann

Our congregation is saddened at the loss of a much loved and faithful servant of God, the Rev. Graham George Lehmann. We offer our prayers and support to Millie, John, Ruth,

 Jenni, Meredith, Naomi and all their families at this difficult time. Rev. Lehmann had a very long association with this congregation throughout his ministry. From 1968-74, he was the

Superintendent minister in the Belmont Circuit which included Belmont, Highton, Grovedale, Moriac, Ceres and Bellbrae. Rev Lehmann was also the first Presbytery minister in the Barwon Presbytery from 1981-89 and was inducted into this role at the Wesley Church, Geelong on the 18th of November 1981.

His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ Matt 25:21

Mr. Keith Fagg OAM

Our congregation will celebrate the 41^stanniversary of the Uniting Church at our combined service 10.00am on Sunday 24^thof June. We are delighted to confirm that our ‘Guest Speaker’ on the day will be the worthy 2018 recipient of the Order of Australia, Mr. Keith Fagg OAM, a devoted Wesley Geelong UCA member, former Geelong Mayor, a respected businessman and a strong community advocate for the whole of the Geelong Region. Keith will reflect on the nature of his long and dynamic relationship with the UCA sharing with us his hopes and aspirations for the church in a changing world. Feel free to invite a friend or a neighbour to come along and share in this fellowship

Joining us on the day will be the Tokaikolo Christian Youth, a Melbourne based branch of the Methodist Church in Tonga. Their attendance represents the multi-cultural reality of the UCA.

This service aims to recreate the tradition of penitential self-reflection that was at the heart of the Ash Wednesday service. It seeks to mark the beginning of Lent and to introduce people of all ages to the ideas of repentance and forgiveness.

Growing up in Tonga in a staunch Methodist upbringing, Ash Wednesday was not part of my formation in the faith. Ash Wednesday amongst other important liturgies of the Church was regarded as a Roman Catholic rite and to commit to it would be deemed as a violation of the Methodist brand of the faith.
It was much later in my faith formation in the Uniting Church that I was introduced to this liturgy, its meaning and significance.

Ash Wednesday signalled the beginning of the season of Christian preparation and formation known as the “Becoming Disciples” process. This process enables the Church to offer a way of preparing catechumens to receive baptism or reaffirm their baptismal vows, at Easter. Ash Wednesday amongst other rites of the Church leading up to and through Lent provides a firm focus on discipleship and Christian living.
