Frontier News – February 2020 Edition

Frontier News is our quarterly publication where we keep our supporters up to date with stories across remote Australia.

We’re heartened by stories of people rallying behind those who are struggling with the ongoing drought, or have lost everything to bushfire. We share some of these stories with you in this edition, including a personal account from our Bush Chaplain Rev Rowena Harris, who was trapped in Mallacoota by the fires. We also introduce you to Pastor Julia Lennon, our first ever female Aboriginal Bush Chaplain, who is working to bring First and Second Peoples together in Oodnadatta.

Thanksgiving Service

Ian Henricus — Sun, 19 May 2019 03:33:31 +0000

We give thanks to the work of all staff and volunteers, who are with Uniting, here and around Victoria, for the work they do for so many people who need help in our community. The love you show in your acts of kindness is a great example of Christian love.

We also extend thanks to the many volunteers who have come together to, very creatively, to knit, crochet, sew and purchase all of these wonderful quilts and goods for donation. Well done you clever people!

Hello from Dominic & Ellen!

Ian Henricus — Sun, 06 May 2018 03:14:38 +0000

On their recent holiday to New Zealand, Peter, Nola and Darryl Wood had the good fortune to catch up with Dominic and Ellen when they were in Dunedin.

You’ll notice the presence of Eliana of course (she’s grown!) but there next to her is their latest arrival, Judah.

Dominic and Ellen want to send you all their best wishes and to tell you that you are all missed.

Patrick Dangerfield, guest speaker at the Men’s Breakfast

Patrick Dangerfield, guest speaker at the Men’s Breakfast

On Saturday we gathered together for a Men’s Breakfast and were given the great opportunity to listen to Patrick Dangerfield, senior player at the Geelong Football Club. Patrick is known to us as grand son-in-law of Heather and Les McCann.

So special was this speaker that the ladies were invited to attend and listen, and it was really lovely to see so many come along.

Patrick introduced himself with a brief history of his career, which has already accomplished so much in terms of football. Wisely he kept this brief and then opened up the floor to the many, many questions from the audience.

We listened to how much he enjoyed his 7 years at the Adelaide Football Club and how well the club treated him. Patrick was a witness to how the impact that the tragic loss of senior coaches affected the football club and how they were able to come together through adversity.

Patrick returned to Geelong to re-join his family in 2015 and has enjoyed being a part of the Geelong Football Club. He has enjoyed being a member of a club who puts community first, along with the other strong principles the club stands for. As the celebrated 2016 Brownlow medallist, Patrick is aware of the honour but said even though it is a recognised honour, it is not something one can share readily. Which is not what a team game is about, is it? He looks forward to the day when he can bring home a premiership cup to Geelong and the memories that come with that.

Patrick impressed us all with his strong yet humble approach to life, work and football. He does, after all, recognise that even though he has enjoyed the great journey that football has given him, it does not compare with the joy that the arrival of his first child has given him.

He is a man whom we are privileged to have in Geelong and a wonderful ambassador for our town’s club. Patrick is someone that so many young people can look up to. Aren’t we lucky?

The BUC website is building a small History section of our church.

Please get in touch with Ian Henricus, Ikani, Geoff, etc and let us know.

Great care will be taken! We will scan them and then return them.

Bushikori

Ian Henricus — Tue, 07 Nov 2017 02:28:48 +0000

BUSHIKORI CHRISTIAN CENTRE

Belmont Uniting Church has had a significant connection with Bushikori from its early beginnings in the 1980’s.

Margery Hobbs, a member of our congregation for many years, together with her late husband Rex, were in Nairobi and met, only by chance, the late Rev. Sam Wandendeya from Mbale, Uganda in 1989. After hearing of his dream to establish a safe haven for children who had been orphaned as a result of the Idi Amin Regime they offered the initial sponsorship.

On their return to Geelong and following a visit from the Rev. Sam Wandeneya, Bushikori Australia was formed in 1994.

Anne Wandendya, Sam’s wife, took over the role as Director following Sam’s tragic death in an automobile accident.

Margery Hobbs is now the Australian Patron of Bushikori.

Two other members of our congregation, Lance and Ella Matheson, have been wonderful supporters of Bushikori, serving on the Australian Support Committee since 1994. The Committee’s members are all from Geelong and district.

Our congregation readily supports the fund raising activities conducted by the Friends of Bushikori Committee. Members, Sue and Bill Jennings, serve on this committee. Many members also sponsor the needy children in the Mbale area, enabling them to attend the Joshua Primary School, and then continue through to secondary and tertiary education if necessary.

The Australian Support Committee are always seeking sponsors for these needy children.

Currently the Bushikori Christian Centre consists of a Health Clinic, a three-roomed Hospital, Joshua Primary School, a Community Library and Hall.

Bushikori’s Mission Statement reads: To empower disadvantaged community members by improving their spiritual and socio-economic status for sustainable development with the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.
